NITK integrates student council election into IRIS for the first time
Mangaluru: NITK Surathkal here for the first time has held its student council election by integrating it into IRIS (Integrated Resource and Information Sharing a system developed in-house by NITK).
The student council election, where a total of over 6,000 votes were cast, was previously conducted through Google forms. The election concluded two days ago. To ensure a foolproof process and avoid any technical glitches, the election was integrated into IRIS. Sources said IRIS was previously used only for hostel elections.
One of the senior professors in charge of IRIS shared that the earlier platform was used only for hostel and related elections. However, in order to make the student council elections more foolproof and seamless, elections held a few days ago were integrated with IRIS.
According to a former student council member, the election was previously held through Google forms, where there were a lot of complaints about students' names being missed out. To avoid this, IRIS was integrated, allowing every eligible student to actively vote without any glitches. It is integrated using students' email IDs. The details of the total voter turnout will be available in a few days.
In the student council elections, except for final year B.Tech, M.Tech, PG courses, and those who submitted their PhD, all can participate in the elections. "This year's student election campaign was done using a lot of social media promotion. There was also a door-to-door campaign from the candidates and their supporters across campus and hostels," shared a student studying in the third year of B.Tech. "The IRIS integration helped in the smooth conduct of the elections for 6,000 plus students. Last year, there was a delay in announcing results, which was sorted this year," said another student.
Ampar Chitharanjan Hegde, dean, student welfare, declined to comment, and the spokesperson of NITK Surathkal was unavailable for comments.
